St Stephen’s Church

St Stephen’s Church was founded by members of the Baltimore Chapter of the Prayer Book Society of the Episcopal Church in November, 1984. In the 20 years since its founding, the church has grown from 30 or so friends worshipping in rented accommodation, to a thriving suburban parish of some 400 souls with its own handsome $1 million worship facility. At the same time, the annual budget has grown from under $30,000 to just shy of $300,000.

The congregation is led by The Ven. Guy P. Hawtin, Rector, The Rev. James V. Johnson, Jr, Associate Rector, and Mrs. Anne Hawkins, Director of Pastoral Care. St Stephen’s is a parish in the Diocese of the Eastern United States of the Anglican Church in America; the Rt. Rev. Louis Campese, Bishop Ordinary.

St Stephen’s Choir of Men and Boys has earned a high acclaim for its repertoire of classical church music, primarily in the Anglican tradition. The parish also has a choir of mixed voices. Both choirs are currently under the leadership of Adric, choirmaster and organist, who was previously the organist and choirmaster at The Church of the Nativity (RC), Timonium, and at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen (RC) in Baltimore.

As well as singing for St Stephen’s Sunday and Feast Day Liturgies, the Choir of Men & Boys has a reputation that extends far beyond the parish boundaries. It helps raise funds for worthy causes with concerts at churches of other denominations. It regularly performs at the Navy College Chapel in Annapolis, Md., and also features prominently in the music program of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. For the past few years, it has sung the cathedral's annual Advent Service of Lesson & Carols.

The parish holds three worship services on Sundays, as well as weekday services and a monthly of Service Evensong, sung by the choir. In addition, it maintains a full schedule of educational activities for children and adults, including Sunday School, weekday Bible studies, catechism and confirmation classes, and inquirers classes.

Missions to the wider world include worship services at Baltimore area retirement communities, with an emphasis on serving the infirm and the cognitively impaired. Currently, we serve the Glen Meadows Retirement Community, Roland Park Place, Blakehurst, Maples Assisted Living, Edenwald, Union Memorial Hospital and GBMC, as well as the Key Point halfway house for the mentally handicapped. St Stephen’s conducts monthly food drives for At Jacob's Well, a mission that provides support for Baltimore's homeless mentally handicapped.

The parish supports the Joseph Richey Hospice, founded by the All Saints Sisters of Catonsville, a community of Anglican religious. The institution provides residential and home hospice care for all who need it, regardless of their ability to pay. Joseph Richey has been recognized by the city and state for the vital care its provides to inner city AIDS sufferers. St Stephen’s rector serves as a volunteer chaplain, providing spiritual and pastoral care for Joseph Richey patients. Parish lay people volunteer at the hospice and help raise funds to maintain it.

St Stephen’s is far from a haven for connoisseurs of antique and exotic liturgical traditions. It strives to worship in the rich Anglican traditional understanding of "the beauty of holiness", but it also does its best to translate what is sung and heard and said on Sunday into something of practical value for the community. Everyone is welcome to St Stephen’s and to its altar rail. Our community is growing, and we hope that, by serving our neighbors, we, too, will grow.
